How to tell if a dress pocket is real

A pocket is either a place to put a phone, or it is decoration. I don’t list decoration. Before anything goes on this site I run the same four checks — from product photos, measurements when they’re given, and reviews that mention a phone by name.

1. Depth — does a phone sit fully in?

If a phone sticks out of the bag, it will bounce and dump. I want the top of the phone below the pocket opening. “Holds my iPhone 15” is a pass. “Cute little pockets” is a fail. Mini phones and credit-card slots do not count — almost anything holds those.

2. Placement — hip height, not mid-thigh

The opening should land where your hands already rest. On dresses and skirts that means the side seam at the hip. On pants, high enough that sitting doesn’t pull the bag open. A pocket set too far back makes you look like you’re searching for a tail.

3. The phone test

Can you walk, sit, and — for shorts — jog without clutching your phone? I look for a hand actually in the pocket, not a posed pinch of fabric, and for reviews that mention a specific phone. If nobody has tried it, I don’t list it.

4. Zipper, or not

Open pockets are fine on a midi dress. They are a liability on 5-inch running shorts. I want a zipper when the inseam is short or the motion is athletic. A zipper is not a substitute for depth — a two-inch zip welt is still a two-inch welt.

What fails the test

Sewn-shut flaps that look like pockets in a flat lay.
Two-inch welts that hold two fingers and nothing else.
Openings dropped to mid-thigh so you have to hike the hem.
Pants pockets that cone into a second hip when you sit.
Running shorts that only “hold a phone” if you clamp your thigh.
