Will the pockets gape when I sit?

On dresses the usual failure is shallow bags, not sit-gape. Side-seam pockets at the hip stay usable in a chair.

Open pocket or zipper?

Open side-seam pockets are fine on midi and maxi dresses. A zipper is not required unless the skirt is very short.
